my birthday words: 27
I grew up in a house where birthdays were a big deal, your very own special day. Jesus gets all the attention at Christmas because that's His birthday, thank you very much. (And all the other days too, of course.)
But May 18th was just for me. (And my Uncle Rick, actually.)
This year, my friend, Holli, warned me in the days leading up to my birthday, "Get ready, Han. I'm gonna ask for your words of wisdom." She has this great habit of pulling out of a person the biggest things they've taken away from the year of life behind them. Some take it really seriously. Some have fun with it.
I made a list. Naturally.
It's been 5 months since I rattled off my list of learnings around a patio table at Southwell's, Katie's hand stretching across me to snatch a french fry and Jeremy running back and forth refilling Dr. Peppers. From the other end of the tables all squished together, Holli received my birthday wisdom words and everyone approved and the night kept moving--to dominating the Jurassic Park game with Betsy and bowling and the birthday cake dreams are made of and the most off-pitch, out of sync, terribly perfect chorus of "happy birthday" I've ever heard, all huddled around my pop-up shop birthday in the middle of a bowling alley.
The night was wonderfully over, but the birthday wisdom stays. Those words aren't done with me.
Obviously. I'm talking about them 5 months later.
Starting tomorrow, I'm going to share my birthday words with you. Some are funnier than others and some are tough lessons I couldn't have handled before 27, but I'll share it all...and I'll shamelessly drag out my birthday for a sixth month or so. Wink.
Come back tomorrow for my birthday words: #1!
Do you have any special birthday traditions or big birthday memories?
